Our Story

What do you get when a quilter/engineer and a fine art photographer decide to create art pieces together? Mixed media, of course! Betsy and Margie, who are neighbors and good friends, have been collaborating by having Margie's beautiful images printed on fabric, quilting them, and incorporating three dimensions within each piece. Thus, Together Art was born.

Betsy started sewing when she was a young girl, but later used the left side of her brain to acquire an engineering degree from The Ohio State University and a Master's degree from the University of Dayton. She was inspired to begin quilting by her (late) mother-in-law, Geri Thomas, a hand-quilter and doll maker. Margie is an accomplished photographer, having studied art at The Ohio State University and acquired a degree in Fine Art from Wright State University. Her artwork has appeared in multiple art venues, shows, and museums.

Many of Betsy's quilts have evolved into the art quilt realm, but Margie's ideas have also inspired them to both go beyond the typical art quilt and create more interest by adding 3-D, almost sculptural, enhancements using items from nature or other recycled objects. The projects are truly collaborative works, with input from husbands as well. We are having fun designing and building these pieces together, and we hope people enjoy experiencing the many dimensions of our work.
